Pictured here is the "hose" basket made by Robby Towill (a gifted artist and friend.)

She informed me the idea was from the internet so I looked for a how to guide, naturally...

The one I found was a little different, but you get the idea.

http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Basket-from-a-Garden-Hose

Now imagine this filled with coffee grounds, tea, washed & crushed egg shells and other garden food you would normally throw away. perhaps a plant or some homemade labels, seed packets, seeds, ... what an unexpected and useful novelty.

(Crochet). This is great for "outdoor" types. It is light and made from "disposable" shopping bags. A little bit of cushioning/ insulation against cool, damp grass at twilight concerts. Gifting this to the homeless is also a very thoughtful idea, but not the only use for this clever mat.

Find a clear and descriptive video guide to crochet for beginners here. Just use plarn instead of yarn. (Plarn is plastic shopping bags turned into yarn.) The plarn can be made as the woman below shows ...

These ideas are not only for girly girls though. Many of them are great for even the "blue" (or green) loving boy (Man) or girl (Teen, Adult). They don't have to involve gardening, although they can :) They don't require a lot of space. They are generally easy to make from upcycled items and easy park/ backyard finds.

*why not make some fairy garden items and include them in a hamper for a "DIY" kit gift. With or without plants (could be grown from cuttings). Consider a basket (second hand shops have loads of these) or a pot, extra points if it is "pre-aged" ( been sitting in your shed for years.)

I love these "mushrooms". For a brighter look they could be decorated with nail polish or paint. Blu tak would work in place of the hot glue gun.
Inspiration can also be found here at the ideas gallery. I love this idea because it is so simple, just cut up a twig with secateurs, then cut some lengthwise to give a "cut wood" look.
The idea for pinecone shingles came from the site above, it doesn't have much by way of directions but the. picture is fairly self explanatory. If you don't have a hot glue gun then check the shed for other adhesives, or you could use chewing gum...yep, it sticks to everything and dries solid (but not clear).

* a coconut shell could be used in many ways pond, boat, hut, roof of dwelling, "pot" for garden and so much more.

http://www.etsy.com/shop/FaerieNest has some wonderful inspiration, if you cannot afford to buy that's ok but with respect to the creator please help spread word of mouth, and social media about this wonderful etzy shop. (I haven't included any photo's because I feel it would be "cheating" the shop.)

This is because it often costs a lot less to just double a recipe, in time and $$$. When you need it you have an almost "instant" meal ready and waiting.

Same goes for gifts. Why make one when you can make 2 or 20 or 100 with very little extra time and effort. Things to keep in mind:
* How long will it last, does this product go "off"?
* Where will you store it?
* Will this be a gift others will like?
* Is this labour/ time intense? Essentially is it worth making many at once?

Baked goods? Many cookie doughs, cake batters etc can be frozen.
I save these. I use them for all sorts of things, scrapbooking, cardmaking, crafting, gift presentation, a collection of them would make a lovely gift for a crafty friend.

Gifts often come with ribbons, I collect and use these too.

Clothes going in the rag pile? Check for useful buttons, ribbons, embellishments (machine embroidered patterns/ images make great patches, and can often be hot glued to lids/ boxes etc.)
These can be collected and used, sold or gifted. ( www.etsy.com has loads of crafty geniuses just waiting to get their hands on your broken watches, jewelery etc ... many would love to swap their talent for your goods.)

Step 1: Collection (the easy part.)

Baby jars are great, know someone with any to spare? If not asking around at local daycare's, preschools, community boards, second hand stores, will get you plenty. Coffee Jars, bed and breakfast businesses, offices, large households, community boards, second hand stores. Pasta jars/ jam jars etc the list of possibilities is almost endless.

Step 2: Ready and waiting (get organised. This is the important part, you want to be able to grab them and use them without stuffing around.)

Removing the labels How to remove labels from jars guide here. I would add that unlike the picture you should wear pants or use a towel to protect yourself from getting burnt when using the hairdryer method. Personally if it's taking ages, stubborn and I don't totally LOVE the jar then I put it (clean) in the recycling bin.

Two storage boxes are useful here, one for clean, waiting to remove label jars, one for "blank canvas" ready to use jars. A third with make ahead, when you are in a crafty mood jars is also handy. These store well in sheds etc. Keeping lids off jars, in an upcycled ice cream/ takeaway etc container prevents mold in moist jars. (A quick side not on allergies, if you know someone with peanut butter allergies then keep this in mind and avoid cross contamination.)

Step 3: Use them, if the collection is getting too big consider gifting them to a local charity second hand store, a local school (often used by schools for craft items) or community group or church. Or even selling them at your next garage sale. (Great around harvest season as everyone is on the lookout, de-labelled and clean jars are prized.)
Recipes abound all over the internet, the basics are:
* room temperature butter or a bloody good blender if it is frozen ;)
* Any edible food, from herbs to flowers to fruit to fish to cheese and so forth. (As this can be made well ahead and frozen it is a great way to use left over fresh herbs, fruit etc)
* Mix, by hand or whatever.
* Shape, rolls are easy (as pictured above), ice "cube" shapes (almost endless possibilities here), fitted in a nice container, from second hand shop gems to takeaway style and everything in between.
* Made in advance is great, as this improves with time and freezes well. For use by information just consider the added ingredients and treat as usual,
A quick re-think on "spending".If you do nothing else today watch The story of stuff (short intro version 2 Minutes 37 Seconds) If you don't want to link direct then please search "the story of stuff- intro".

Basically we buy stuff, we consume stuff, waste is created...what happens is this...where does it go?What can we do? RETHINK how we spend our money. We are the "consumers", our money is our vote. Our actions matter. We can make a difference in real terms!
(this is a random image of "the day after Christmas", we all know it, we've all been part of it.)

So what now...turn your head, walk away, buy a novelty item that claims "green", "eco" ? Don't answer in words, answer in actions, simple, achievable little changes to habits and ways of thinking.
